Mats

Mats are flat pieces of fabric or other material used in a variety of applications. They are generally placed on the floor but may be appropriate for other surfaces. Some of their applications include creating a regular surface, providing hygienic functions, protecting a surface, and protecting people or items above the mat from the surface being covered. They also may simply be used for reasons of décor.

There are many familiar types of mats used within the home. Some are placed at the door to welcome visitors and provide an area to clean off shoes before entering the house. In the bathroom, they may provide a non-slip surface and/or absorb water. Smaller versions then these are commonly used as a surface for dining ware on the table.

Mats are also found in a variety of other applications outside the home. Some are used during gymnastics and other athletic activity to provide supportive, non-slip surfaces. An anti-vibration mat may be used under certain vibrating, heavy machinery to protect the floor where it is located.
