Persian Rugs
Persian rugs or carpets are valued aspects of Persian art and culture. The traditional practice of weaving carpets dates back to ancient Persia. For reference, the first Persian Empire was formed around 728 B.C. This was known as the Median Empire.
The history of Persian rugs is often viewed in terms of the Pre-Islamic, Islamic, and Modern periods. The first extends roughly into the 7th century. The Islamic period is dated from around the 8th century to the around the 17th. Modern rugs are those which arose within the last two or three centuries. Of course, these exact divisions are not agreed upon by all.
Today, Persian rugs are generally divided into three groups. The first, either Farsh or 'Qālii', are sized over 6"x4". Qālicheh are rugs at that size or smaller. The final group is that of Kilim, the nomadic carpets.
